Central Africa

The Central Africa Programme of the EGMONT Institute is headed by Prof. Dr. Koen Vlassenroot. It aims at conducting research on political, economic, social and security issues and developments relating to this region (especially Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda). It also focuses on the major trends on the African continent (African Union, Regional Integration, conflict analysis and post-conflict reconstruction) and the role and position of the EU in Sub-Sahara Africa.

European Affairs

The European Affairs Programme is devoted to the study of institutional affairs as well as the various policies of the Union. Since 1995, it has been associated with the negotiations preparing the Amsterdam Treaty, Agenda 2000, the Nice Treaty and the activities of the European Convention. It has contributed in many ways to the Belgian presidency of the European Union in 2001.

Europe in the World

The Europe in the World Programme is headed by Prof. Dr. Sven Biscop. It contributes to the debate on a new security concept for the multipolar world of the 21st century. In today's world, security is no longer limited to the military sphere alone. A holistic approach is required.

This programme is structured around three projects: the European Security Project identifies the practical implications of the implementation of a holistic European security strategy; the Global Governance Project aims to contribute to a coherent multilateral agenda for the joint management of global issues and the Middle East Project focuses on the strategic implications of the Sunni-Shia divide in the Muslim world.
